Expressing Preferences

We often use words like prefer, would prefer, would rather to talk or ask about preferences.

"I prefer living on my own."
"Would you prefer to see a movie or go to a club?"
"Would you rather go shopping with me?"

Those expressions are quite different in meaning and this is why learners of English often find them challenging. So here is how we can separate them:

· Difference in meaning:

We tend to use 'prefer' to talk generally about likes, dislikes, what we want.

“He prefers reading books.”
“I prefer going to the beach than going to a swimming pool.”

The expressions 'would prefer' and 'would rather', to be a little more specific.

“I would prefer to see him in person.”
“I would rather go home now.”

· Difference in form:

Followed by a different verb form:

1. Prefer

Pattern:

· Subject + Prefer + to infinitive

· Subject + Prefer + Nouns + to + Nouns

· Subject + Prefer + Gerund + to + Gerund ( verb + ing)

Example:

· They prefer to go now

· My mother prefers lemon to orange

· She prefers watching TV to listening to the radio

· I prefer living in a city.

· I would prefer to be told the truth.

· Would you rather stay at a hotel?.

2. Would Rather

Pattern:

· Subject + would rather + VI (without to infinitives)

· Subject + would rather + Infinitives + than + Infinitives

· Subject + would rather + someone + VII

Example:

· I would rather study now

· She would rather stay home than go shopping

· We’d rather play card than play ball

· I’d rather you went now

3. Would Prefer to

Pattern:

· Subject + Would Prefer to + infinitive +rather than + inf

· Subject + would Prefer to + infinitives + Nouns + rather than + infinitives + Nouns

Example:

· They would prefer to sing rather than dance

· You’d prefer to play ball rather than take a sleep

4. Like

Pattern:

· Subject + Like + Nouns/Gerunds

· Subject + like +gerunds + better than + gerund

· Subject + like + noun + better than + noun

Example:

· I like singing a song

· She likes singing a song better than playing a guitar

· They like coffee better than tea

Pattern:

· Subject + had better + infinitive

· Subject + had better + not + infinitive

Example:

· You had better study hard

· You had better not work on Sundays

6. It’s time

Pattern:

· It’s time + to infinitives

· It’s time + Subject + VII

Example:

· It’s time to get up

· It’s time you went away

7. Instead of

Instead of kita gunakan sebagai pengganti dari: to, than, better than, rather than

Pattern:

· Instead of + Gerund/Nouns
